Sunderdhunga Trekking Route & Experience

The trek begins from Loharkhet (1,980 m) with a 10 km ascent leading to Dhakuri (2,680 m). From here, trekkers descend 8 km to Khati (2,200 m), the largest village on this route, known as a popular resting point for travelers.

On the next day, a 7 km trek leads to Jatoli (2,440 m), a remote village nestled beside a stream. The village, though secluded, offers a charming experience with its scenic landscapes and warm, albeit shy, locals eager to share their way of life.

Next day, the trail becomes more demanding, with a 13 km ascent to Kathaliya (3,206 m). Around 6 km from Jatoli, the terrain begins to change drastically as the valley opens up, revealing the first clear views of Panwali Dwar and Maiktoli ridges. The final 3-4 km stretch is a steady climb through thick shrubs, eventually giving way to smaller alpine vegetation as trekkers approach the treeline’s end. A lone shepherd’s hut sits on the other side of the river, marking the transition into more rugged terrain. At the end of the valley stands a commanding ridge, with Panwali Dwar partially visible to the right and Maiktoli, one of the most stunning and highest peaks in the area, looming on the left. The day concludes with an overnight stay in a shepherd’s hut or tents, with the majestic snow-clad peaks as the backdrop.

The following morning, the trail descends to the river, where trekkers cross over a large boulder acting as a natural bridge. The valley here is lush green, attracting local shepherds. In the distance, Baluni Top rises sharply, creating a dramatic landscape. As the path ascends further towards the Sunderdhunga Glacier, breathtaking views of ice formations, pristine landscapes, and rugged beauty unfold. The shimmering streams, rocky moraines, and imposing glaciers make this portion of the trek awe-inspiring.

From here, the journey continues toward Maiktoli Base Camp (4,320 m), a truly rewarding destination that offers panoramic views of the stunning Maiktoli Peak, standing tall amidst the Kumaon Himalayas.
